The Anointing is for a purpose

    • (Psalm 92:10-15) But you have exalted my horn like that of the wild ox; you have poured over me fresh oil.
    •   Mine eye also shall see my desire on mine enemies, and mine ears shall hear my desire of the wicked that rise up against me.
The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God.
      They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing;
To shew that the LORD is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.
    Purpose
As we will see, a person was anointed to stand in a particular office or to render special service to God.
Aaron and is sons, stood in a Priesthood office. Exodus 29:4-7
    • (Exodus 40:12)  And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and wash them with water.
    • (Exodus 40:13)  And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments, and anoint him, and sanctify him; that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office.
    • (Exodus 40:14)  And thou shalt bring his sons, and clothe them with coats:
    • (Exodus 40:15)  And thou shalt anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father, that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office: for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.
The  anointing oil was holy because it was a type of the spirit of God.  After the anointing with oil, the Spirit of God would come upon the man of God to anoint him from that day forward to fulfill his office and to carry out God’s plan for him on the earth.
    The Lord  Designates is Anointing
    • (Exodus 30:30)  And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office.
    • (Exodus 30:31)  And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, This shall be an holy anointing oil unto me throughout your generations.
    • (Exodus 30:32)  Upon man’s flesh shall it not be poured, neither shall ye make any other like it, after the composition of it: it is holy, and it shall be holy unto you.
    • that is, it shall be used only upon those whom the Lord designates to be set aside for His purpose, not for common purpose.
The anointing for the Office of the Prophet ( Elijah and Elisha were Prophet)
    • (1King 19:15)  And the LORD said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:
    • (1King 19:16)  And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.
    • (1King 19:19)  So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him.
    • (1King 19:20)  And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee?
    • (1King 19:21)  And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.
    • Then in Psalm 105:15  Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.
    •  God calls His prophets His anointed, Old Testament prophets were anointed by this Spirit of God to enable them to stand of function in particular office.
    The Anointing for the King’s Office ( 1Sa 16:1-8, 10-13 )
    • (1Samuel 15:1)  Samuel also said unto Saul, The LORD sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the LORD.
    • (1Samuel 16:1)  And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
    • (1Samuel 16:13)  Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
    • (Psalm 89:20)  I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him:
    The Anointing Upon Jesus
    • (Luke 1:35)  And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
Just as Jesus birth into this world was a work of the holy Spirit, the believer’s birth into the family of God, the new birth, is accomplished through the work of the Holy Spirit. Luke 3 chapter 3, we see thirty years after Jesus’ birth He was anointed with the Holy Spirit. He was endued with power from on High. In other words, He was anointed with the Holy Spirit to carry forth His ministry on the earth.
    • (Luke 3:21)  Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
    • (Luke 3:22)  And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
    • (Luke 4:14)  And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.
He was anointed He returned to His hometown of Nazareth and declared that He was anointed by the Spirit of God Lord He said.
    • (Luke 4:18)  The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
    • (Luke 4:19)  To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

Believers also need to be anointed from heaven for service just as Jesus was. When is the believer.
